Protek

Undersea fibre to resort villas

Protek's portfolio includes a fibre backbone laid under the sea to the ocean villas at Angsana Velavaru, with a gigabit network to each villa. A backbone is the main cable that links a site's buildings, and gigabit is a high-speed grade of wired network. The same page describes the company as full-service IT. Trading as Protek Company Pvt Ltd, it gives an office address in Malé on its contact page.

Integration, networking and managed IT

Its home page sets out three lines: system integration, networking and managed IT services. System integration means making equipment from several makers work as one set-up. The page says its relationships with Cisco, HP, Microsoft, NEC, Dell and VMware let it design and build systems for an organisation. It describes its work as running from pre-sale advice through to installation. Under managed IT, it offers to take over the day-to-day running and management of an organisation's technology.

Phones, TV, Wi-Fi and cameras for resorts

At Anantara Dhigu, its portfolio lists an Alcatel PBX, an optical fibre backbone, gigabit switching and a MATV head-end. A PBX is the private phone exchange that links room and office phones, and MATV shares TV channels from one head-end to many rooms. For Banyan Tree Maldives and Angsana Ihuru, it lists NEC phone systems, IPTV, Ruckus Wi-Fi and fire alarms, with Samsung CCTV at Angsana Ihuru.

At W Retreat and Spa, the page describes a gigabit network to each room, ready for IPTV, with Teledex internet. Baros gets an Alcatel PBX and internet to every room, while Coco Palm and Crossroads Maldives each list a phone system.

Airlines, utilities and public bodies

Its client posts name Sri Lankan Airlines, Saudia, MNDF, the Police, Stelco and MWSC. MNDF is the Maldives National Defence Force, Stelco the electricity company and MWSC the water and sewerage company. Hotel Jen, Holiday Inn, Naadhu Maldives, Loama Resort Maldives at Mamigili and Valtur Kihadhuffaru Maldives appear on the same list.

How its directory entry files it

Its Local.mv entry files it under telecommunication equipment, CCTV and network accessories, and networking solutions.

Getting help, and questions to ask

Its Customer Care page takes support tickets online, with room for a file attachment, and the contact page has an enquiry form.

Fibre and gigabit cabling run through its resort jobs. These pointers are general guidance for any network or camera job, not statements about Protek. Ask which cable will be pulled, whether it travels in conduit or trunking (pipes and channels that shield it), and who patches the walls after.

Its home page names makers such as Cisco and Dell. Have the quote list the make and model of every switch, router or camera, and keep the maker's warranty separate from the installer's own cover.

CCTV features in its portfolio and in its directory categories. Agree where each camera points, so it watches your own door and stairs, never into a neighbour's flat.

Faults reach its help desk as tickets. Before work ends, settle who answers when something stops, what can be fixed remotely, and when a visit is needed.
