From a timber workshop to resort builder

Aima Construction's Who We Are page says the company started nearly sixty years ago, in a small timber workshop in the capital. Its founder, a young Maldivian artist, swapped his paintbrushes for a chisel and made tables and chairs by hand. Within two generations, the page says, the family business moved from furniture to the resorts and hotels that hold it. It trades as AIMA Construction Pvt Ltd, from an office in Malé.

Names along the way

Its Local.mv listing traces the business to a carpentry shop in Malé, which was later renamed AIMA Woodworks. The listing says building contracts came as early as 1973, the first being a court building and a residential project. The listing adds that the firm became AIMA Woodworks and Contracting Company Pvt Ltd in 1991, and AIMA Construction Company Pvt Ltd in January 1997.

Housing and city buildings

Its Who We Are page says it has developed homes, buildings that define the nation, and harbours, as well as island resorts. Its project page for Hulhumalé housing flats, dated 2009, shows a turnkey job for the Hulhumalé Development Corporation covering all builders' work. That work spanned architectural, structural and MEP works. MEP stands for mechanical, electrical and plumbing: the wiring, pipes, pumps and cooling inside a building.

In Malé, a project page dated 2013 shows it completing the structure and all masonry for commercial and residential buildings at Malé Grand and Malé Square.

Resort refurbishment and new islands

At Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa, a project dated 2016 included a major refurbishment and extension of sundecks, with pools fitted to overwater villas.

For Patina Maldives in the Fari Islands, dated 2021, Aima designed and delivered the MEP, architectural and structural work, from villas to jetties, bridges and boardwalks. That project used cross-laminated timber on walls and roofs. Cross-laminated timber is made from layers of wood glued crosswise into large, stiff panels. Its project list also names COMO Cocoa Island, Kanuhura, Velaa Private Island, LUX* South Ari Atoll and the Hulhule Island Hotel.

How Aima runs a job

Its Total Solution concept gathers designers, architects, landscapers and civil engineers around one project. The page names in-house MEP engineers and the Japanese builder Kurihara, which it says it has worked with for more than fifteen years. It also says its work meets or surpasses FIDIC benchmarks, the international contract standards used for building works.

Its own fleet of supply vessels moves teams and materials out to island sites. The page says its waste disposal and building methods are set up to safeguard nearby coral reefs. Its community giving includes donated construction materials and the redecoration of an island school.

Points to settle before you sign

Its website lists a separate email address for business enquiries, alongside its phone lines. These tips are general guidance for anyone commissioning building or renovation work; they describe good practice, not Aima Construction. Link each payment to a finished stage, and hold back a final part until the snag list, the list of small faults to fix, is cleared. Ask for measurements and photos to be taken on site before any figure, so quotes from different builders price the same work. Ask how long the builder covers its workmanship after handover, and what that cover includes. Where a wall shows damp, ask how its source will be traced and cured before paint goes on, and how any roof or bathroom seal is tested.
