SJ Construction

The contractor SJ Group grew from

SJ Group's website says the group started in 1996 with SJ Construction, a general works contractor. It says the company widened its scope through many challenging projects, building up skills in construction and related engineering. The website footer names SJ Construction Pvt Ltd and places it at SJ Mall in Hulhumalé.

The group now has three companies: SJ Construction, SJ Trade and SJ Mall. SJ Trade joined as a sister company in 2017 and runs SJ Mall, SJ Hardware and SJ Aluminum.

What the company is set up to do

Its Local.mv listing gives the company name as SJ Construction & Trade Pvt. Ltd., previously SJ Trading Company Pvt. Ltd. The listing records registration for civil construction, carpentry work, fishing, and wholesale and retail trading. It describes projects in civil engineering and in residential, institutional and commercial building, for private and public clients.

On the group website, SJ Construction's services are civil construction, carpentry work, finishing, and the trading and rental of construction materials and equipment. Finishing means the final layers of a build, such as plaster, paint, tiles and trims. The site names civil construction and consultancy as its major fields. It describes a team with site and technical experience in construction and civil engineering, working with clients from start to finish.

Mosques, a school and public housing

Its portfolio features mosques, schools, harbours and civil works for government and private clients across the atolls. Its website's selected projects include Masjid Al-Dukhtur Afrasheem Ali, the Ungoofaaru Islamic Centre, built for the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

Its project list also names Dharumavantha School in Malé, built for the Ministry of Education. Its project list adds two-storey row houses in Dhidhdhoo for the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development. The project list marks all three as completed.

Homes the group develops in Hulhumalé

Beyond contracting, the group develops waterfront residential communities in Hulhumalé. Its website shows SJ Creek as finished, SJ Nove as selling now and SJ Dhihereya Residence as upcoming.

Getting in touch

The group website takes enquiries by phone, WhatsApp and email. Its older address, sjconstruction.mv, now redirects visitors to sjgroup.mv.

Questions for carpentry, finishing and renovation

Local.mv files the company under Renovation & Refurbishment as well as Construction. The questions here are general guidance for anyone hiring a contractor for this kind of work, not statements about SJ Construction. For a renovation, ask who removes the debris, where it goes, and whether that is in the price. If the work needs scaffolding or other hired equipment, ask whether hire, setting up and removal are included.

Carpentry work appears in both its registration and its current service list. For cabinets, doors or wardrobes, ask which board or timber will be used, how it will be finished and which hinge and handle brands go on.

Finishing sits on the same service list. For plaster, paint and tiles, ask for each finish as its own line, with the brand and who supplies it. Ask to see a sample of the chosen tile, paint colour or laminate before the order is placed.
